Nyx Studios is a small, fast-moving indie game studio and an IP powerhouse. At Nyx Studios, we pour our hearts and souls into everything we create: games, worlds, and stories that push the boundaries of imagination. Our team is small but fiercely dedicated, moving quickly to build something truly original. We dream big, work hard, and are deeply committed to our craft.
We are looking for an Art Director to join our ambitious team—a talented illustrator and art pipeline manager with a sharp eye for detail, a flair for worldbuilding, and the ability to bring big ideas to life: on paper and on screen.
Our projects span both tabletop and video game titles, and we expect our Art Director to excel in leading and overseeing all aspects of our branching productions. Our flagship HAVOC: Gen Zero is a dark, mature sci-fi adventure, which represents the kind of projects we create.
Responsibilities:
As part of their responsibilities, the Art Director will:
- Organize Art: Structure, manage, and lead all aspects of 2D and 3D art projects. Provide regular feedback and direction to maintain high-quality production standards, ensuring that the artistic vision aligns with the overall creative goals of the game and IP.
- Illustrate Art: Create high-quality, original 2D illustrations that define the visual tone of HAVOC and its world. Your illustrations will bring key characters, environments, and scenes to life, capturing the essence of the game’s atmosphere and story.
- Oversee Art: Oversee and streamline the art production pipeline, evaluating and solving workflow inefficiencies, ensuring that all art is produced efficiently, on time, and meets top-quality standards and functions in print and in-engine.
- Plan Art: Draft and comment on plans, proactively identify potential challenges, drive innovative solutions, and establish key objectives for the team.
- Ideate Art: Actively shape the original IP of HAVOC by contributing novel ideas, sketching concept art, and producing final 2D art assets.
- Put Art in Everything: Collaborate closely with other teams, providing creative input and support to elevate the overall design of the project and its brand. Be ready to assist wherever your expertise is needed, including in marketing.
Qualifications:
- Excellent freehand illustration skills: characters, scenes, environments, references for 3D art creation, storyboards.
- Proven track record: at least 2 titles where you significantly contributed to the game’s art all the way to launch—preferably aligned in art style with our flagship HAVOC.
- Strong software knowledge: great understanding of diverse art software and asset implementation pipelines (Adobe Creative Suite: Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign, ZBrush, Blender, Maya, 3ds Max, Substance Painter, Substance Designer, Unity, Unreal).
- A strong portfolio: demonstrates your creative process, from sketch to final art.
- Rich experience: at least 5 years of experience in video game or tabletop game art, with a minimum of 2 years as a Lead Artist or Art Director.
- Strong communication and organizational skills: able to effectively coordinate and document the work of the art team (Jira, Notion, Trello).
- A passion for science fiction: with a knack for creating forward-thinking concepts that push and redefine genre conventions.
- Excellent English language skills.
What We Offer:
- A competitive salary.
- An exceptional work environment within a highly ambitious team of professionals.
- A supportive team focused on maintaining respect and trust without crunch.
How to Apply:
- Send a relevant art portfolio and resume demonstrating your qualifications.
- We value attention to detail. Share your thoughts on our past project (HAVOC Gen Zero) and explain how your creative talents can help advance our vision. Also mention a sci-fi game, book, or film that has inspired your imagination in the past—this lets us know you've read the full description.
Even if you don't meet all the qualifications, outline where you fall short and how you'd compensate—research shows women and underrepresented groups are more likely to hesitate to apply, even if they are adequately qualified. We're committed to reviewing every application submitted. Help change those statistics.
We are an equal-opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status. We promote emotional well-being.
